Dr. Martin Stewart Karp has built his career on the belief that education is most potent when leaders remain connected to students and classrooms. Rather than observing change from a distance, he has consistently chosen to participate directly in shaping schools, policies, and learning environments. For more than thirty years, his work has reflected a deep understanding that progress in education happens through sustained involvement, thoughtful leadership, and an unwavering focus on children.
From his earliest days as a teacher to his current executive leadership role, Dr. Karp has approached education as both a responsibility and a calling. His professional path demonstrates a rare blend of instructional experience, strategic vision, and personal commitment to student growth.
Strong Academic Roots and Interdisciplinary Training
Dr. Martin Karp completed his higher education at the University of Miami, earning a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership along with a Master of Education. He also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing, providing him with a foundation in organizational management and communication.
To further broaden his expertise, he pursued graduate studies at Syracuse University, where he earned a degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications through a combined Master of Science and Master of Business Administration program. This interdisciplinary background equipped him with the tools to lead complex institutions, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, and manage large-scale initiatives across education and media.
Learning Through Teaching and Early Leadership
Dr. Karp began his career in the classroom, where his passion for student engagement and innovation quickly became evident. As a teacher at Biscayne Elementary School, he developed a gifted education program that brought together students from public and private schools. This initiative challenged traditional boundaries and created a collaborative learning environment that emphasized curiosity, rigor, and inclusion.
His work extended into exceptional student education, where he served as a specialist and department chairperson. In these roles, he created student fairs and public events designed to celebrate the accomplishments of students receiving special education services. His leadership focused on highlighting strengths rather than limitations and ensuring that every student felt valued and supported.
Integrating Media, Communication, and Education
Alongside his work in schools, Dr. Karp developed a strong presence in the media and publishing industries. He served as Business Manager for Southern Playbill Publishing and later as Circulation Director for Miami Beach Magazine. These roles strengthened his understanding of audience engagement, operational management, and strategic messaging.
His interest in educational storytelling led him to design and produce broadcast programming that highlighted classroom learning. He created WKDZ Kids’ World, a weekly educational television show that aired on Cable TAP and WLRN TV Channel 17. The program showcased students, hands-on projects, and innovative teaching practices, helping bridge the gap between schools and the wider community.
Service on the Miami-Dade County School Board
Dr. Martin Karp served four consecutive terms on the Miami-Dade County School Board from 2004 to 2020. During this time, he became known for his practical approach to governance and his consistent focus on student-centered policies. His leadership emphasized solutions grounded in research, experience, and community input.
Throughout his tenure, he advocated for later start times for high schools, healthier school environments, expanded gifted and science education programs, increased services for students with disabilities, and comprehensive vaping education initiatives. He also worked to strengthen student wellness programs and improve access to specialized support services.
Dr. Karp served multiple terms as Vice Chair of the School Board, reflecting his colleagues’ confidence in his leadership and judgment.
Executive Leadership and Program Development
Currently, Dr. Karp serves as Chief of Staff to the Head of Schools for a consortium of institutions affiliated with Talmudic University. His responsibilities include overseeing contracts, guiding strategic planning, coordinating leadership meetings, and supporting academic divisions at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels.
One of his most impactful initiatives has been establishing the Success Center at Yeshiva Elementary School. This program was designed for students who excel in nontraditional learning environments. It combines foundational instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics with weekly STEM projects, enrichment opportunities, and guest speakers.
The Success Center reflects Dr. Karp’s belief that education should adapt to students, not the other way around. He also introduced new assessment tools and individualized learning plans that allow educators to track progress while honoring each child’s unique strengths and interests.
Commitment to Civic and Community Service
Dr. Karp’s dedication to service extends well beyond education. Since 1995, he has volunteered with Miami-Dade Animal Services and the Humane Society, supporting the H.O.P.E. Contest, a student-driven initiative focused on animal welfare awareness and responsible care.
He has also been involved with Scouting USA since the 1980s, serving in leadership roles such as Assistant Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, and Advancement Chairman. These roles reflect his commitment to youth development, leadership training, and community engagement.
In addition, Dr. Karp has served for more than 1616 years on the WLRN Community Advisory Board, contributing to public broadcasting initiatives and reviewing educational materials for award-winning documentaries.
Honors Reflecting a Career of Impact
Throughout his career, Dr. Karp has received numerous awards recognizing his leadership and service. These include the Educational Leadership Award from Yeshiva Elementary and Middle Schools, the Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award from Nova Southeastern University,
The Guardian of Youth Philanthropy Award from SHAPE, and induction into the Miami Beach Senior High School Hall of Fame.
He has also received the Helping Hands Award, the People, Pets, and Vets Award, the PTA and PTSA Lifetime Legacy Award, and Teacher of the Year honors at Biscayne Elementary School.

At the center of Dr. Martin Karp’s life is his family and a strong sense of purpose. He and his wife Danielle are raising three sons, Herschel, Benjamin, and Samson Raphael, instilling in them the values of education, service, and community. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to thoughtful, hands-on leadership, always centered on children's well-being.
